In December 2021, OeEB provided funds to build a sewage treatment plant in Zrenjanin, Serbia. The financing is in line with OeEB's strategy, according to which activities with a focus on climate financing are to be supported.

Project name Begej Water WWTP
Region Southeast Europe
Sector Water supply and sanitation
Service Investment finance
Project country Serbia
Project volume EUR 24.8  million
Project partner(s) Begej Water d.o.o. Beograd

The funds provided by OeEB will be used for the planning, development, construction and commissioning of a new sewage treatment plant with a final capacity of up to 25,000 m3 per day in the city of Zrenjanin and surrounding settlements. With around 76,500 inhabitants, Zrenjanin is the sixth largest city in Serbia. The project sponsor is the company Metito Utilities Ltd. from Dubai (UAE), a global leader in water and wastewater treatment.

The Republic of Serbia only uses 5-10 percent of the total municipal wastewater. This puts Serbia at the bottom of the list of European countries in terms of having municipal wastewater treatment facilities. This project will treat/purify all the sewage from the city of Zrenjanin to an irrigation quality level and transfer the liquid part to the Begej river. The exiting treated water is suitable for agriculture.
