Sierra Leone: Strengthening the private sector important after Ebola epidemic

The Ebola epidemic claimed thousands of lives in Sierra Leone. It also set back the country's economic development. It is now essential to boost the economy and private investors play a crucial role. They were also important partners for the local health care system in the fight against Ebola.

With support of OeEB and other development banks, one company provided hygiene products, protective clothing and vehicles, supported in overseeing quarantine, trained healthcare personnel and implemented awareness-raising campaigns. Moreover, it constructed an Ebola Treatment Center with OeEB Advisory Programmes funds.

Following the emergency assistance, it is now important to focus on the future. "The people in Sierra Leone need jobs," explain Andrea Hagmann and Michael Wancata, members of OeEB's executive board. "And companies need well trained employees." These challenges need to come into focus and the private sector should again play an active role.
